ADOLYGIAD GAN DR LLIO MAI HUGHES

REVIEW BY DR LLIO MAI HUGHES

Nofel sydd wedi ei hanelu ar gyfer pobl ifanc yn eu harddegau cynnar yw Gwennol. Dywed y broliant ar y cefn ei bod yn nofel afaelgar, ac mae hynny’n bendant yn wir gan nad oeddwn i’n gallu ei rhoi i lawr!

Stori am ddwy ferch 13 oed yw hon, sef Eldra ac Yvonne. Mae diwrnod Eldra yn yr ysgol yn mynd o ddrwg i waeth. Oes, mae ganddi wers Addysg Gorfforol, ond nid dyna ydi darn gwaethaf y diwrnod o bell ffordd. Yn eistedd ar ei phen ei hun yn yr ystafell ddosbarth ar ôl y wers Gymraeg mae’r dagrau’n dechrau llifo, hyd nes y daw Yvonne i’r golwg. Dyma ddiwrnod cyntaf Yvonne yn ei hysgol newydd, a tydi hithau ddim yn cael diwrnod da iawn chwaith. Tydi Eldra ddim yn rhy siŵr o’r hogan newydd i ddechrau, mae hi’n union fel Mandy Price, yn llawn hyder ac yn dweud wrthi beth i’w wneud. Mae gan Eldra ei hofn hi braidd. Yn ystod gwers ola’r dydd, y wers Ffrangeg, mae Yvonne yn dechrau deall beth sydd wedi digwydd i Eldra. Er mai newydd ei chyfarfod mae hi, mae rhywbeth yn dweud wrth Yvonne y dylai ei helpu. Cyn hynny, wrth iddi ffrwydro yng nghanol y wers Ffrangeg, daw’r dosbarth a Miss Meredydd i ddeall mwy am Yvonne hefyd.

Mae Eldra’n dechrau newid ei meddwl am yr hogan newydd. Tydi hi ddim fel Mandy. Mae Eldra’n teimlo’n gartrefol ac yn saff yng nghwmni Yvonne. Daw’r ddwy yn dipyn o ffrindiau, ac ar ôl gwers Addysg Gorfforol, mae Yvonne yn sylwi ar y man geni glas siâp gwennol sydd ar ffêr Eldra, a dyma ddechrau stori anghygoel sy’n datod wrth i’r genod ddod i wybod mwy am ei gilydd.

Dyma stori sy’n cyffwrdd â rhai o drafferthion ysgol a thyfu i fyny yn ogystal â galar a cholled a mabwysiadu hefyd. Mae’n stori am gyfeillgarwch ac yn stori am berthyn. Byddwn yn bendant yn argymell y nofel hon fel llyfr darllen i berson ifanc yn eu harddegau cynnar, ond efallai y bydd yn apelio fwy at ferched. Mae’n darllen yn hawdd, mae’r eirfa’n briodol ar gyfer yr oed darllen – yn ddigon i ehangu gerifa heb fod yn rhy heriol yn fy marn i. Byddwn wedi hoffi clywed mwy am Myfanwy McBryde, ond peryg mai testun nofel arall fyddai hynny. Mi oeddwn i hefyd yn hoff iawn o’r ffeithiau diddorol sydd wedi’u cynnwys ar ddiwedd y nofel sy’n ychwanegu at ein dealltwriaeth o rai o elfennau’r stori.

Gwybodaeth Bellach:

Mae merch o’r enw Yvonne yn dechrau yn ysgol Eldra. Mae’r ddwy ferch 13 oed yn wahanol iawn, ac eto mae ’na debygrwydd ac agosatrwydd rhyngddynt. Mae gwirionedd y sefyllfa yn sioc i’r ddwy, ac yn newid eu bywydau. * Nofel wreiddiol ar gyfer darllenwyr hŷn (12-14 oed), gan un o awduron mwyaf poblogaidd Cymru; * Gellir ei darllen yn annibynnol er mwyn mwynhad, neu ei defnyddio yn yr ystafell ddosbarth gyda dysgwyr Cyfnod Allweddol 3; * Mae pecyn digidol am ddim ar wefan Hwb, sy’n cynnwys cwestiynau i gyd-fynd â’r nofel. Bydd y nofel yn helpu dysgwyr i fwynhau darllen drwy ganfod, dethol a defnyddio gwybodaeth yn ogystal ag ymateb i’r hyn a ddarllenwyd mewn modd ysgogol – bydd hyn yn arwain at ddealltwriaeth o astudio’r nofel fel cyfrwng rhyddiaith ac yn ymateb i fanyleb newydd TGAU 2016 maes o law.

Gwennol is a novel aimed at young people in their early teens. The blurb on the back says that it’s a gripping novel, and this was certainly the case – I couldn’t put it down. I read it in one sitting if I recall!

This is a story about two 13-year-old girls, Eldra and Yvonne. Eldra's day at school goes from bad to worse. Yes, she has a PE lesson, but that is by no means the worst part of the day. As she sits alone in the classroom after the Welsh lesson, the tears begin to flow until Yvonne emerges. This is Yvonne's first day at her new school, and she's not having a very good day either. Eldra isn't too sure of the new girl at first -she's just like Mandy Price, full of confidence and tells her what to do. Eldra is a bit scared of her to be honest. During the day's last lesson, Yvonne begins to understand what has happened to Eldra. Although she has only just met her, something tells Yvonne that she should help her. Before that, as she has an outburst in the middle of the French lesson, the class and Miss Meredydd come to understand more about Yvonne as well.

Eldra starts to change her mind about the new girl. She’s not like Mandy. Eldra feels at ease and safe in Yvonne's company. The two become friends, and after a PE lesson, Yvonne notices the swallow-shaped blue birthmark on Eldra's ankle, and this is the beginning of an extraordinary story that unravels as the girls discover more about each other.

This is a story that touches on some of the difficulties of school and growing up as well as grief, loss and adoption as well. It is a story of friendship and a story of belonging. I would definitely recommend this novel for any teenager in their early teens, although it may be more appealing to girls. It reads easily and the text is appropriate for the reading age – enough to expand vocabulary without being too challenging in my opinion. I would have liked to hear more about Myfanwy McBryde, but that would be another novel in itself. I also loved the interesting facts that have been included at the end of the novel that add to our understanding of some of the elements of the story.

Further Information:

A girl named Yvonne arrives at Eldra's school. The two 13 year old girls are very different, and yet there's a similarity and familiarity between them. The truth of the situation comes as a shock to them which will change both their lives. * An original novel for older readers (12-14 years), by one of Wales' most popular authors; * It can be read independently for enjoyment, or used in a classroom with Key Stage 3 learners; * There is a digital package available for free on the Hwb website, which includes questions to accompany the novel. The novel will help learners enjoy a novel by identifying, selecting and using information as well as responding to the material in a stimulating way - this will lead to an understanding of the novel as a prose medium and responding to new GCSE 2016 specifications in due course.
